After his medical degree, the Dutch national completed his MBA and then worked for Merck & Co as well as for Procter & Gamble. He managed a medium sized family business for a time. In 1995 he moved into management consulting, for several years leading projects for global industry companies. After he moved to the chemical industry, he held senior positions in the field of international purchasing and marketing.
